Feathered Friends Fair at Abernethy Laurels

Thanks to the hard work of Rev. Dosia Carlson, the residents, and staff of Abernethy Laurels, a Feathered Friends Fair was held on Friday, July 23rd at the Community Center. "This project really brought together people from all areas of Abernethy Laurels and the outside community, as well" commented Rev. Carlson.
A challenge went out about a month ago for residents and staff to find things within the Abernethy community and in their own homes that were depictions of birds of any type. As the month went on it was almost like a scavenger hunt around the community as people searched for pictures of birds, statues, paintings, birds in the wallpaper, magazine pictures, articles, decoys and even live birds. Everything was put on display for all to enjoy and a formal program was held in the afternoon featuring Bruce Beerbower of the Catawba Science Center, and an expert on birds. Mr. Beerbower brought several examples of birds with him and presented a very informative slide presentation on how to identify the different species of birds around North Carolina.
The Feathered Friends Fair was the closing celebration of a week-long Vacation Bible School at Abernethy Laurels which was attended by the residents.
