Devotion: A Christ-Focused Life

April 15, 2020

Devotion provided by Rev. Susan Roddey, Director of Spiritual Life at Abernethy Laurels

“So if you’re serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it.  Pursue the things over which Christ presides.  Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you.  Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ - that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective.  Your old life is dead.  Your new life, which is your real life – even though invisible to spectators – is with Christ in God.  He is your life.  When Christ (your real life, remember) shows up again on this earth, you’ll show up too – the real you, the glorious you.” Colossians 3:1-4

Easter Sunday is over. Like Christmas, we often let its message fade into the background of our daily lives and “shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of [us].”   But Paul challenges us to act like we are serious about living this Easter message every day.  This life is our real life – the life that we as Christians claim is at the core of our being.  The interpretation I used for this passage is from The Word.  We may be more familiar with the powerfully poetic words “for you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God” that come from other translations. What does that mean?  What in us has died? Does it mean as Christians we have gone into hiding? Far from it.

Surely we have all met Christians of whom are so centered in their faith, we can tell they live their lives completely from the inside out.  They are not caught up in status, looking good, leading for the sake of attention, gossip and accumulating wealth – that is, living from the outside in, a way of living that distorts our souls.  They may not even say a lot of words about their faith, but they live it out in acts of justice, compassion, wise leadership, often putting themselves last.  They have put to death self-centered thoughts and desires.  Their lives are hidden with Christ in God, so that most of what they do comes from the center of Christ alive deep within their soul.  Through Christ at the center they live lives as the real people God called them to be and Christ frees them to be.  They have shed any pretense that keeps them from being that person. Hopefully, we are all that type of person at least some of the time.

We get so caught up in managing everyday life, sometimes just trying to get through the day that we forget who we are; we forget to live out a resurrected life in Christ.  We have to take time to stop and remember that our lives are protected in Christ and we don’t have to seize things that don’t last in order to think we will live.  Those things are not going to sustain us in the long run. Let us live real inside out lives where what we do radiates from that Christ-like center within us and gives us and others new life.

Prayer:  O Christ, help us to go beyond hearing the Easter message to living it.  May we find our center in You.  Amen.
