Housing Options for Older Adults
July 6, 2021
Depending on your particular desires and needs, there are no right or wrong answers or choices. Generally, retirement communities are put into three categories: Active Adult or 55+ Communities; Rental Retirement Communities; and Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC). We hope this article will help you make the best choice for you!
Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC)
Continuing Care Retirement Communities, like Abernethy Laurels, offer living arrangements ranging from residential living in cottages, villas and apartments to assisted living and nursing care. Residential living is commonly referred to as “independent living or residential living” at many communities. Many services and activities are available on-campus such as multiple dining venues, walking trails and fitness centers. Members can enjoy all the benefits of active retirement living, with a safety net of health services on site. Simply put, a CCRC is a particular type of retirement community that offers several levels of health services on one campus.
Active adult housing refers to communities either age targeted or age-restricted to people aged 55 or older. Active adult housing is often designed for complete single-level floor living, with features like an open floor plan including master bedroom, bath, kitchen and laundry on the same level. Home exteriors are planned to require little or no maintenance, and often a monthly association fee includes landscaping, yard maintenance, and snow removal. Active adult communities feature amenities planned into the communities such as walking trails, clubhouse, indoor and/or outdoor pool, game rooms, and they are often built around golf courses and tennis courts. Most active adult housing is a deeded purchase and have all the costs associated with homeownership, including any Homeowners’ Association Fees.
Retirement Homes to Rent are becoming more common among seniors who enjoy spending time traveling and are unwilling to be tied to homeownership. Also, if you are transitioning from your pre-retirement home and are not sure what situation is right for you, a rental retirement home may be a temporary answer. These type homes are generally apartment style or villa/condo type housing with some health related services. Services may be limited but can cater to the needs of those requiring some assistance in performing daily tasks, such as in assisted living. Off-site recreation is also frequently available. Transportation is provided and planned excursions, to shopping centers, malls, or even cultural events, sporting events, dinner theaters and sightseeing are frequently offered.
