Abernethy Laurels Awards Bumgarner With Community Fearless Caregiver Award
October 13, 2016
Abernethy Laurels retirement community and Gary Barg, founder and editor-in-chief of Today’s Caregiver magazine and author of several caregiving books, presented Adult Life Programs executive director, Mark Bumgarner, with the Community Fearless Caregiver Award at a recent Fearless Caregiver Conference.
Qualifications for the award include: a professional who nurtures family caregivers in the community; provides community caregivers training, counseling, support, care services and/or respite; cares for themselves as they, too, care for a loved one; and gives the gift of time to family caregivers in the community.
“As I receive this award, please know that I accept it on behalf of the hundreds of caregivers touched by Adult Life Programs,” stated Bumgarner. “Even as a young child, I was taught that caregiving for someone is just what you do. I am fortunate to be able to have a career where I can help those struggling caregivers and embrace the challenges that come with that responsibility. Currently I serve as a caregiver for my father, so I understand that caregivers awake and face each new day knowing that, supported or unsupported, compensated or uncompensated, appreciated or not, someone they love relies on them for care. It is comforting to know that we have a community that works together to provide caregivers with the much-needed education and support.”
As executive director of Adult Life Programs, Bumgarner operates three adult day services centers throughout Catawba County. The non-profit organization’s mission is to provide support, respite and education to caregivers and affordable, quality day and treatment services that enables adults to remain in their communities.
“When considering who should be chosen for this award, Mark came to mind immediately,” stated Shaylyn Ladd, Director of Public Relations at Abernethy Laurels. “Not only does Mark talk the talk, but he walks the walk. As an industry partner, Abernethy Laurels was proud to recognize Mark and Adult Life Programs with this award.”
