Abernethy Laurels to Welcome Author, Historian Richard Eller

September 14, 2016

Abernethy Laurels will welcome author and historian Richard Eller to their campus for a series of presentations beginning Friday, September 16. The presentations, which will focus on the history of Piedmont Airlines, will be held each Friday through September at 10am in the Community Center.

When Eller was a child he used to pass by Smith Reynolds Airport on his way to and from his home near Walkertown and see the Piedmont Airlines planes there.

"I saw the Piedmont planes at the airport and became a fan," said Eller, who is now the chairman of the social sciences department and a history instructor at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory.

His interest in those planes led him to write a book on Piedmont, the Winston-Salem based airline that was bought out by US Air, now US Airways, in an acquisition that was completed in 1989. Eller's book, "The Complete History of Piedmont Airlines," was published in 2008.

Throughout the series, Eller will relive the history of Piedmont Airlines from its humble beginnings to its absorption into USAir after a buyout at the highest price ever commanded by a regional airline.
