Rosy Reflections - The Power of a Flower
May 21, 2021
“Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.” ―H. Jackson Brown Jr.
This quote from Jackson Brown couldn’t be truer of Abernethy Laurels’ resident Sue Smith. Sue spent the majority of her career as a teacher for developmentally disabled children and later as executive director for a non-profit organization supporting children living with disabilities.
While residing at Abernethy Laurels, team members learned when Sue wasn’t caring for others, she enjoyed tending to flowers in her spare time – with roses being her favorite. Unfortunately due to medical conditions, she is unable to enjoy the horticulture hobby she once loved. Chaplain Susan Roddey submitted a dream nomination requesting to shower Smith’s room with roses and coordinating décor to lift her spirits and bring joy to her in the same way she did for so many others throughout the years.
Sue’s smile beamed ear to ear when she arrived back to her room after lunch and discovered the “rosy” surprise displayed. Being the giver that Sue is, she asked for us to distribute a majority of the roses to her fellow residents in hopes to spread some spring cheer to them.
Sue Smith’s dream was made possible by Grant-a-Dream, a program through United Church Homes and Services that renews and celebrates the passion while creating joy in the hearts of seniors within their communities.
